John Burns is a person with lived experience and serves as Executive Director of SOS Recovery Community Organization, which operates peer-based recovery community centers in Rochester, Dover, and Exeter, New Hampshire, as well as the social enterprise restaurant Fold’d Community Diner in Somersworth.

In 2014, John founded Families Hoping and Coping, a peer-based family support group created to serve family members and loved ones of individuals with lived and living experience who use drugs.

Documentation: Changes in Dimensions and Levels of Care

Description:

This 5-hour free workshop will provide an overview of the ASAM Criteria 4th Edition and DSM-5-TR covering changes to Dimensions and Levels of Care. This discussion will provide an overview of assessment considerations and explore the ASAM Criteria 4th Edition’s guidance on treatment planning and documentation.

Participants will practice writing defensible clinical justifications as part of the assessment documentation process. This will include bringing together those assessment and documentation pieces and using case studies in small-group activities to identify placement and continued stay criteria, which will help determine and justify the client’s clinical needs.

Objectives:

• Participants will be able to accurately identify individualized assessment needs and placement decisions based on the ASAM Criteria 4th Edition and DSM-5-TR.
• Participants will be able to analyze and identify ASAM Criteria 4th Edition guidance on treatment plan creation.
• Participants will be able to identify the steps necessary to write a defensible clinical justification using the ASAM Criteria 4th Edition.
• Participants will practice writing a clinical justification.

Biography:

Glenn Duncan LPC, LCADC, CCS, ACS has been working in the behavioral healthcare field for 32 years. He has lectured nationally on many topics, including clinical supervision. Since 2011, Glenn has been the owner of Advanced Counselor Training, LLC.

Glenn authored a chapter on the use of live supervision in a community treatment organization for the book The Use of Technology in Clinical Supervision and Training: Mental Health Applications. Glenn has written three publications used for continuing education on the topic of clinical supervision, including virtual supervision and other technology issues.

Glenn has consulted nationally with authorities on both the state and federal level. His presentations on emerging drugs of abuse have been used by officials in Illinois, Delaware, New Hampshire, and by DEA officials for training purposes.

Glenn also teaches on other topics such as harm reduction, cultural humility, medicinal and legal cannabis, and legal and ethical issues in counseling. He also teaches the ASAM Criteria 3rd and 4th Editions nationally.

Workshop – Transforming Care for Pregnant and Parenting People September 30, 2024

This workshop will provide an overview of the ASAM 3 Criteria, with a focus on the components of ASAM 3 Criteria that are required to properly place clients and determine continued-stay needs. The workshop will also include an overview of assessment considerations and an exploration of the ASAM 3 client placement criteria for level 3 (residential care).

The learning objectives for this SUD Learning Community event are:

1. Participants will be able to accurately identify individualized assessment needs and placement decisions based on the DSM-5-TR and ASAM 3rd Edition Criteria.
2. Participants will incorporate ASAM 3rd Edition Criteria into level-of-care decisions, using case presentations to enhance knowledge application.
3. Using case studies, participants will be able to place clients in the appropriate level of care based on ASAM 3rd Edition Criteria and justify their level-of-care plans.
