GAIN-SS Screening in New Hampshire

The Global Appraisal of Individual Needs – Short Screener (GAIN-SS) is a brief screening tool designed to support student success. It helps identify early signs of substance use and mental health concerns before they escalate. Results can guide parents and Student Assistance Programs (SAPs) in determining appropriate support.

The GAIN-SS consists of 21 questions, takes about 5 minutes to complete, and is evidence-based and scientifically validated, aligning closely with assessments conducted by trained behavioral health professionals.

Substance Use and the Developing Brain

Teenage substance use can have a significant impact on a young person’s physical, emotional, and social well-being. Substance use during adolescence can disrupt brain development, leading to problems with memory, attention, decision-making, and impulse control. It can also increase the risk of mental health disorders, such as anxiety and depression. Substance use can also interfere with academic and social development development, leading to problems with school performance, relationships, and future career prospects.

Teenage substance use can also lead to risky behaviors, such as driving under the influence, engaging in unprotected sex, and experimenting with other drugs. This can increase the risk of accidents, injuries, and the transmission of sexually transmitted infections.
